Sherwood Park Triathlon Sets Stage for Youth and Junior Cup Finish

August marks the homestretch of the provincial triathlon circuit, with competitors preparing for the final event of the Youth and Junior Cup at the Sherwood Park Triathlon on August 30. Up for grabs across all six divisions are official Triathlon Alberta Champion tri-suits awarded to the overall series winners.

The upcoming race brings an end to a summer marked by unpredictable conditions across Alberta. Organizers, officials, and athletes navigated a tough calendar, contending with extreme heat and air quality advisories in parts of the province while heavy storms impacted events elsewhere.

Under Cup scoring rules, an athlete's final total combines their single best winter result, their best two summer results, and earned bonus points. Athletes who complete all three summer events will unlock an additional 25-point series bonus, while those with two summer races already under their belt have the opportunity to drop their lowest summer score if they turn in a higher finish at Sherwood Park.

Youth Divisions

The 12-13 male youth division features Luke Shopland atop the standings with 200 points, backed by wins at the ETA aquathlon and Beaumont triathlon. Landon Lau holds second place with 100 points following his victory at Lott Creek. Kabir Sodhi and Matthew Bogaars remain tied for third at 95 points, with Joshua Smith and Maximilano Rayas-Ferado sitting right behind at 90.

In the 12-13 female division, Maelle Robert carries a dominant, perfect record into the finale. Robert has swept every event on the calendar for 325 points, including a +25 winter attendance bonus. Melia Swinkels-Santo holds second place with 190 points, while Mayla Ferguson sits in third with 90.

The 14-15 male youth category presents the closest title race on the circuit. Defending champion Will Zinkin and Thomas August Kenny are deadlocked at 300 points apiece, with both having unlocked the +25 winter bonus. Kenny holds a narrow summer edge (185 points to Zinkin's 175), but both drivers can swap out their lowest summer scores at Sherwood Park—Zinkin dropping an 80 and Kenny an 85. David Labrecque remains in podium position in third with 260 points.

The 14-15 female category features Brechan Kennedy holding first place with 200 points following wins at ETA and Beaumont. Lauren Smith trails by just 10 points in second place with 190, while Trillian Klinkhamer holds third with 100 points.

Junior Divisions

In the 16-19 junior male category, 19-year-old newcomer Tucker Buhler leads the pack with 275 points after taking top points at ETA and Beaumont. Geoff Grundy sits 40 points back in second place with 235 points, while Hudson Quinn occupies third with 200.

Taryn Shalapay controls the top position in the 16-19 junior female division with 270 points. Payten Barr holds second place with 230 points, and Aubrey Kennedy rounds out the top three with 190.

Post-Race Plans

Official Cup results will be calculated immediately after the Sherwood Park race wraps up. Organizers will host an awards ceremony and post-race barbecue on site to present the champion awards and wrap up the season schedule.
