Youth and Junior Triathletes Gear Up for Summer Season After Conclusion of Winter Series
With the winter segment of the Triathlon Alberta Youth and Junior Cup now complete, attention turns to the summer season, set to begin later this month with the Drayton Valley Triathlon. The series, which showcases Alberta’s top young triathletes, has already delivered a number of standout performances and promises an exciting finish as athletes continue to chase points toward the season championship.
Leading the way in the Youth 14–15 Female category is Lua Perez Hernandez, who has proven to be a dominant force with a commanding 635 points. In the Youth 12–13 Male division, the competition is much tighter, with Luke Shopland holding a narrow five-point edge over Cohen Kinkaide heading into the summer races.
Meanwhile, Blake Buchanan has established a strong lead in the Youth 12–13 Female category, while Kehlan Duncan enters the summer season with a sizeable lead among Youth 14–15 Male competitors.
In the Junior 16–19 Male division, Alex Zombar holds a 30-point advantage over Thomas Chalupa, with Maklin Klaassen also in striking distance. On the female side, Aubrey Kennedy currently leads the Junior 16–19 Female category.
The summer race schedule begins May 31 with the Drayton Valley Triathlon, followed by events in Grande Prairie (July 6), Elbow Valley (July 12), Beaumont (July 19–20), and concludes with Stony Plain on August 9.
Points in the Youth and Junior Cup are awarded to annual Triathlon Alberta members who hold draft-legal certification. Athletes receive 100 points for first place, 95 for second, 90 for third, and so on based on final race results. No additional registration is required to be part of the series.
At the end of the season, the overall points leader in each category will be crowned champion and receive a custom “Champion” tri-suit from Triathlon Alberta, presented the following year.
