Youth and Junior Development Program Qualification Policy

Junior Team (Tier 1)

Team selection will be based on race experience, and individual achievement and ability. Acceptance to this team requires:

  1. Competition in a minimum of Junior Provincials (Victory Triathlon) or (Magog CAMTRI American Cup), National Championships in Kelowna and 2 other recognized races (see below for list of 2018 races). *Living Sky Triathlon * will be the Western Qualifier for National Championships in Kelowna, it will be a mandatory event for athletes interested in qualifying for the Tier 1 Provincial Team. Athletes racing in YOG qualifier in Salinas will be exempt from having to race the Living Sky Triathlon due to conflicts with travel;

  2. A score of 535 points or fewer for Junior Men and a score of 570 points or fewer for Junior Women;
  3. A completed application to be received by the TA Junior Development Coach LINK no later than September 15, 2018.

The Selection Committee will select the final team. These athletes will have the opportunity to receive advanced selection for camps, clinics and gear for 2019.

**How your points will be determined

For team selection, an athlete will want to have a low points score. The total points are determined by a combination of the athlete’s internal ranking, 200m swim time trial, and 1500m run time trial.  Points are assigned as 1 (one) point per second for the swim & run TTs, and 10 (ten) points per ranking position.

For example:

Athlete X (ranked 2nd, 2:22 swim, 4:30 run):

(2 x 10 = 20) + (142) + (270) = 432

Athlete Y (ranked 10th, 2:25 swim, 4:50 run):

(10 x 10 = 100) + (145) + (290) = 535

You can see by these examples that emphasis is placed on race performance. For this season, an internal ranking system will be used, which is similar to the national ranking used in the past. Final ranking will be determined by the sum of the athlete’s performances from the recognized races. Points will be awarded for participation in “Alberta U19 Super Series Events”:

  • Lethbridge Triathlon
  • Coronation Triathlon
  • Victory Triathlon - Lake Summerside
  • WTS Edmonton Junior Race

The best 3 out of 4 performances in the Alberta U19 Super Series will be taken into consideration in qualification for the 2018/2019 Youth and Junior Development Team. Junior National Championships performances will also be taken into consideration for qualifying for the 2018/2019 Youth and Junior Development Team. In the event of a tie, athletes will be ranked in order of their finish at the Junior National Championship held on August 18-19, 2018 in Kelowna, BC. Internal ranking information will be circulated by email to athletes intending to qualify for the team prior to the final race in Kelowna; athletes will have this opportunity to verify the results to date, before final ranking is calculated after the Edmonton race.
